How to Turn Your Bathroom Into a Spa

By Lindsay Goebel Last Updated May 11, 2021 3 min read

If your bathroom is in need of a summer refresh, consider drawing inspiration from luxury spas. Think calming tones, a relaxing atmosphere, and zenned out bliss. Here are a few ways to transform your bathroom into your very own spa:

1. Declutter and minimize

This is one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to transform a space. By simply clearing out the clutter, you’re well on your way to a spa-like bathroom.

Start by removing everything from your bathroom and tossing or recycling products you no longer use. Next, buy some containers and bin organizers to keep everything in order. Place all of your items in your vanity or bathroom closet. Consider using a caddy for items you use every day so you can easily place back in storage when you’re done!

2. Incorporate earthy tones

Colors are known to evoke certain emotions or even encourage choices and behaviors. Cool, earthy tones are soothing and relaxing – hence the reason they are often used in luxury spas and saunas. When refreshing your bathroom, consider incorporating earthy tones that you would find in nature.

You can add these tones in a number of ways from your paint, to your backsplash, to your bathmats and vanity pieces.

3. Add some plants (but not too many)

If you didn’t know, there are some houseplants that can clean the air. Also, plants help you become more attuned with nature and overall happier (it’s science!). Try bringing some nature into your bathroom with a plant, or two.

Don’t add too many plants though, per step 1 (declutter). Before you add plants into your bathroom spa, research which plants do well in this kind of environment. Bathrooms tend to be more humid and have less natural light than the other rooms in a home. If you have a skylight, like the image above, you have more options!

4. Change your lights to dimmers

A big reason why spas feel so tranquil is the low lighting. You can easily mimic this in your own bathroom by changing out your light switches to dimmers.

Imagine soaking in a hot bath or taking a long shower with your lights dimmed halfway down. It will make a bigger difference than you think!

When you add small changes like the tips mentioned above, you’ll create a spa-like bathroom for your home.
